Formula
The calculator above works out your average pace and speed for a given distance and finish time. The formulas are:
- Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
- Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)
Where t is the total time in minutes, d is the distance in kilometers, pace is minutes per kilometer, and speed is kilometers per hour. The same formulas work for miles if you enter distance in miles and interpret pace as min/mile.
Worked Example
Using the default values: t = 50 minutes, d = 10 km.
- Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km
- Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h
The calculator returns a pace of 5.00 min/km and a speed of 12.00 km/h.
When to Use This Calculator
Use this tool when you have a race or training run time and distance, and you want to know your average pace per kilometer or mile. It’s also useful for planning: if you know your target pace, you can work backward to estimate finish time. For example, a 10 km race in 50 minutes means you held exactly 5:00 per km. A half marathon (21.1 km) in 1 hour 45 minutes (105 min) gives a pace of 4.98 min/km, or about 5:00 per km.
How to Read the Result
The first output, pace, is the big number. Lower is faster. The second output, speed, is the equivalent in kilometers per hour. For most runners, pace is more intuitive. If you run on a treadmill set to 12 km/h, that’s exactly a 5:00 min/km pace. If you see 6.00 min/km, your speed is 10 km/h. The two are just different ways of expressing the same effort.
Common Mistakes
- Mixing minutes and seconds: Enter total minutes only. 1:30:00 is 90 minutes, not 1.5.
- Using miles with km/h: If you enter distance in miles, the speed output is in miles per hour, not km/h. The pace is min/mile. Don’t mix units.
- Rounding too early: Keep at least two decimals in intermediate steps. Rounding 50 ÷ 10 to 5.0 is fine, but for 21.1 km in 105 min, use 4.976, not 5.0, for accurate speed.
Limitations of the Formula
This calculator assumes constant pace. Real runs have hills, stops, and surges. It gives your average, not your instantaneous pace. It also ignores elevation gain, which can make a hilly 10 km feel much harder than a flat one at the same average pace. For interval training, use a workout-specific calculator. For races with varying terrain, your average pace may not reflect your true effort.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert pace to speed without a calculator?
Divide 60 by your pace in minutes per km. For example, 5:00 min/km → 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. For 6:30 min/km, convert to decimal (6.5) then 60 ÷ 6.5 = 9.23 km/h.
Is a faster pace always better?
Not for training. Easy runs should be at a comfortable pace, often 60-70% of your max heart rate. Racing faster than your fitness allows leads to burnout or injury. Use pace zones based on your recent race times.
What is a good 10 km pace for a beginner?
For a beginner who can run 10 km without walking, a pace between 6:30 and 8:00 min/km is typical. That translates to 7.5 to 9.2 km/h. The most important thing is finishing, not speed.
Does the calculator work for walking?
Yes, the math is identical. A brisk walk is about 5.0 km/h, which is a 12:00 min/km pace. Enter your walking time and distance to get your average.
How do I use this for a marathon?
Enter 42.195 km as distance and your target finish time in minutes. For a 4-hour marathon, that’s 240 minutes. The calculator gives 5.69 min/km (about 5:41 per km), which is 10.55 km/h.
What if I run on a track and know my lap time?
Multiply your 400 m lap time by 2.5 to get minutes per km. For example, a 2:00 lap (120 seconds) → 120 × 2.5 = 300 seconds = 5:00 min/km. Then use the calculator for speed.
