Apple’s Reserve & Pick Up service lets you order a product online and collect it at a local Apple Store, usually within an hour. You enter your zip code, choose a store, pay online, and the item is held for you for 14 days. It combines the convenience of online shopping with the immediacy of in-store pickup, and it is free for all customers.

Formula

The calculator above computes your average pace and speed for a run or walk. Pace is the time it takes to cover one kilometer (or mile), expressed in minutes per unit distance. Speed is the distance covered per hour. The formulas are:

  • Pace = Finish time ÷ Distance
  • Speed = Distance ÷ (Finish time ÷ 60)

Where finish time is in minutes, distance is in kilometers (or miles), pace is in minutes per kilometer (or mile), and speed is in kilometers per hour (or miles per hour).

Worked Example

Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.0 min/km
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.0 km/h

So your average pace is 5 minutes per kilometer, and your average speed is 12 kilometers per hour.

When to Use This Calculator

Use this tool when you want to know your average pace for a training run, a race, or a casual walk. It helps you set realistic goals, compare performances across different distances, and plan your training intensity. For example, if you ran 5 km in 30 minutes, your pace is 6 min/km and your speed is 10 km/h.

How to Read the Results

A lower pace (e.g., 4:30 min/km) means you are faster than a higher pace (e.g., 6:00 min/km). Speed is the opposite: a higher speed (e.g., 13 km/h) is faster than a lower speed (e.g., 8 km/h). Pace is more common in running communities, while speed is often used in cycling or driving contexts.

Common Mistakes

  • Mixing units: If you enter distance in miles, the pace will be in minutes per mile, and speed in miles per hour. Do not combine kilometers with minutes per mile.
  • Forgetting to convert seconds: If your finish time is 1 hour 10 minutes, convert to 70 minutes before entering.
  • Rounding too early: Keep at least two decimals during intermediate steps to avoid errors in the final result.

Limitations of the Formula

The formula assumes a constant speed throughout the activity. In reality, your pace varies with terrain, weather, and fatigue. The result is an average, not a real-time measurement. For hilly routes, the average pace may not reflect the true effort. Also, the formula does not account for pauses or stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my pace from min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934 to get min/mile. For example, 5 min/km × 1.60934 = 8.05 min/mile. To convert speed, multiply km/h by 0.621371 to get mph.

What is a good running pace for a beginner?

A common beginner pace is around 7 to 8 minutes per kilometer (11 to 13 minutes per mile). This varies by age, fitness, and gender. Focus on maintaining a conversational effort rather than a specific number.

Can I use this calculator for walking?

Yes, the same formulas apply to walking. A typical walking pace is 10 to 15 minutes per kilometer (16 to 24 minutes per mile).

Why is my speed lower than I expected?

Speed depends on distance and time. If you walked or ran slowly, your speed will be lower. Also, check that you entered the time in minutes, not seconds or hours. A common error is entering 90 for 1 hour 30 minutes, which should be 90 minutes, not 1.5.

How do I calculate pace for a marathon?

If you want to finish a marathon (42.195 km) in 4 hours, convert 4 hours to 240 minutes. Pace = 240 ÷ 42.195 = 5.69 min/km (about 5:41 per km). Use the calculator with distance 42.195 and time 240.
