Commune with Chaos & Reach the Desolate Keep Guide

Card No. 06·55445 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide walks you through the two-part endgame sequence in Mortal Shell: communing with the Dark Father (the chaos) and then navigating the treacherous path to the Desolate Keep. You’ll learn the exact order of actions, the item you must have, and how to survive the final gauntlet. By the end, you’ll be standing before the game’s last boss with a clear head and a full resolve bar.

What You’ll Need

  • A completed playthrough of Mortal Shell (all three main areas cleared: Fallgrim, the Crypt of Martyrs, and the Seat of Infinity).
  • The Gland (the item you receive after defeating the final boss of each area). You must have at least one Gland in your inventory.
  • A Shell that is upgraded to at least level 3 (you’ll want the extra health and stamina for the final stretch).
  • A fully upgraded weapon (any weapon works, but the Martyr’s Blade is recommended for its reach and damage).
  • At least 3 Resolve (the blue bar) to use a powerful weapon ability when needed.
  • Patience. The final area is a gauntlet, not a sprint.

Step-by-Step

  1. Return to Fallgrim. After defeating the final boss of the second area (the Seat of Infinity), you’ll be back in Fallgrim. Make your way to the central hub, the Fallgrim Tower.
  2. Find the Old Prisoner. Inside the tower, go to the lower level. You’ll see a cell with an old man sitting inside. This is the prisoner who speaks of the Dark Father.
  3. Initiate the dialogue. Talk to him. He will ask if you are ready to commune with the Dark Father. Choose the dialogue option that says you are ready.
  4. Offer the Gland. The game will prompt you to offer a Gland. Confirm. The screen will fade to black, and you’ll be transported to a surreal, dark plane.
  5. Walk the dark path. You’ll be in a void-like area with a single, winding path. Follow it. There are no enemies here, but the atmosphere is oppressive. Just keep walking forward.
  6. Reach the Dark Father. At the end of the path, you’ll find a massive, shadowy figure. Approach it. You’ll be given the option to “Commune.” Do it.
  7. Watch the cutscene. The Dark Father will speak to you. This is the game’s lore dump. After the dialogue, you’ll receive the Dark Father’s Resolve (a new ability) and be told to seek the Desolate Keep.
  8. Wake up in Fallgrim. You’ll be back in the tower. The prisoner is gone. Leave the tower.
  9. Head to the Shrine of Ash. From the tower, go to the area you previously explored to reach the Seat of Infinity. The entrance to the Shrine of Ash is near the tower, but now there’s a new path open. Look for a large, previously sealed gate near the tower’s base.
  10. Enter the Shrine of Ash. Go through the gate. You’ll be in a new, lava-filled area. This is the final zone.
  11. Follow the linear path. The Shrine of Ash is mostly linear. You’ll face new enemies: the Ash Grisha and the Scourge. Use your harden ability liberally. Don’t rush.
  12. Cross the lava pits. You’ll come to areas with narrow walkways over lava. Take your time. If you fall, you’ll take heavy damage and respawn at the last checkpoint.
  13. Climb the tower. After a series of fights, you’ll reach a tall tower. Climb the interior. There are more enemies, including archers. Use the pillars for cover.
  14. Reach the top. At the top, you’ll find a fog gate. This is the entrance to the Desolate Keep. Enter it.
  15. Prepare for the final boss. Inside, you’ll face the final boss, the Unchained. This is a tough fight. Use your new Dark Father’s Resolve ability (it’s a powerful AoE attack) when you have full Resolve.

Common Mistakes

  • Not having a Gland. If you haven’t beaten the final boss of an area, you won’t have a Gland. You must have at least one to commune.
  • Trying to commune before the game allows it. The option to commune only appears after you’ve beaten the Seat of Infinity’s boss (the final area before the endgame).
  • Rushing through the Shrine of Ash. The enemies here hit hard. Rushing will get you killed. Use your harden and parry.
  • Forgetting to upgrade your weapon. The final boss has a lot of health. A +5 weapon is almost mandatory.
  • Not using the Dark Father’s Resolve. It’s a powerful tool. Use it when you’re surrounded or to stagger the boss.

Tips

  • Stock up on Grisha meat and roasted rats. You’ll need healing items. Buy them from the merchant in Fallgrim before you leave.
  • Use the Tarnished Seal. If you have it, it gives you a second chance when you die. It’s invaluable in the final gauntlet.
  • Learn the Ash Grisha’s moves. They have a three-hit combo. Harden through the third hit, then punish.
  • Use the environment. In the Shrine of Ash, you can lure enemies into lava pits. It’s a quick way to deal with tough enemies.
  • Save your Resolve for the boss. Don’t waste it on regular enemies. You’ll want the full bar for the Unchained.

Troubleshooting

  • The prisoner won’t talk to me. Make sure you’ve beaten the Seat of Infinity’s boss. If you have, try quitting to the main menu and reloading your save.
  • I can’t find the gate to the Shrine of Ash. It’s near the tower, but you must have communed first. If you haven’t, the gate is sealed. Go back to the prisoner.
  • I keep dying to the Ash Grisha. Use your harden more. Also, try using a weapon with a faster moveset, like the Hammer and Chisel.
  • The final boss is too hard. Make sure you have full Resolve and all your healing items. Also, learn the boss’s attack patterns. It has a tell before each attack. Use harden to tank the big hits.
  • I fell into the lava and now I’m stuck. You’ll respawn at the last checkpoint. It’s not a softlock. Just be more careful next time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to beat the game on New Game+ to commune?

No. You can commune on your first playthrough. You just need to have beaten the final boss of the Seat of Infinity (the third area).

Can I commune multiple times?

No. Once you commune, the prisoner disappears. You can only do it once per playthrough.

What does the Dark Father’s Resolve do?

It’s a special ability that triggers a powerful area-of-effect attack that damages and staggers enemies around you. It’s very useful in the final boss fight.

Is the Desolate Keep the same as the Seat of Infinity?

No. The Desolate Keep is the final area, accessed through the Shrine of Ash. The Seat of Infinity is the third main area you visit earlier in the game.

Can I leave the Shrine of Ash and come back later?

Yes, you can backtrack to Fallgrim at any time, but the Shrine of Ash is a one-way path for the most part. There are no shortcuts back until you reach the end.

What happens if I die to the final boss?

You’ll respawn at the fog gate. You can retry as many times as you want. You won’t lose your Gland or any items.
