Create Slides in Gemini Canvas & Export Them

Card No. 06·17020 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide shows you how to build a slide deck directly in Gemini Canvas, Google’s AI-powered workspace, and then export it as a PowerPoint file or Google Slides presentation. You’ll learn the exact steps to generate, edit, and download your slides, plus how to fix common issues.

What You’ll Need

  • A Google account (personal or Workspace) with access to Gemini.
  • Gemini Canvas feature enabled (available on web at gemini.google.com, and in the Gemini app on Android and iOS).
  • A web browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari) on desktop, or the Gemini mobile app.
  • For exporting to Google Slides, you’ll also need access to Google Drive and Google Slides (free with any Google account).

Step-by-Step

  1. Open Gemini Canvas. Go to gemini.google.com and sign in. In the prompt box, click the “Canvas” icon (a small square with a pencil) to open a new Canvas workspace. On mobile, tap the same icon in the app.
  2. Start a new slide deck. In the Canvas, you’ll see a blank document area. Click the “Slides” option from the toolbar or simply type a prompt like “Create a 5-slide presentation about renewable energy.” Gemini will generate a slide deck structure with placeholder content.
  3. Refine the content with prompts. Use the chat panel on the side to give instructions: “Make the third slide about solar power,” “Shorten the bullet points,” or “Add a slide on wind energy.” Gemini updates the slides in real time.
  4. Edit slides directly. Click on any text box, image, or shape on the slide to edit it directly. You can change text, resize elements, or delete them. Use the toolbar at the top to add new slides, duplicate, or reorder them.
  5. Change the theme (optional). In the toolbar, click “Theme” to choose a different color scheme or font style. You can also adjust the layout of individual slides via the “Layout” button.
  6. Preview your deck. Click the “Present” button (play icon) to see a full-screen preview. Use arrow keys to navigate. Click “Exit” to return to editing.
  7. Export to PowerPoint. Click the “Export” button (downward arrow icon) in the top-right corner of the Canvas. Choose “PowerPoint (.pptx)” from the dropdown. The file will download to your computer.
  8. Export to Google Slides. In the same Export menu, select “Google Slides.” Gemini will create a copy in your Google Drive and open it in a new tab. The deck is now fully editable in Google Slides.
  9. Share or download from Google Slides (if needed). Once in Google Slides, you can share it with others via the “Share” button, or download it as a PowerPoint, PDF, or other format via File > Download.

Common Mistakes

  • Not using Canvas mode. Typing a prompt in the regular Gemini chat won’t open the slides editor. You must click the Canvas icon first.
  • Editing the chat instead of the slide. After generating, some users type “change the title” in the chat, which may create a new slide instead of editing the current one. Instead, click directly on the slide text and edit it.
  • Exporting too early. If you export before the deck is final, you’ll have to redo the export after each change. Make all edits first, then export once.
  • Forgetting to check the Google Slides copy. The exported Google Slides file is a separate copy. If you edit the original in Canvas, those changes won’t appear in the exported file unless you export again.

Tips

  • Use specific prompts for better results: instead of “make a presentation,” say “Create a 6-slide deck for a business proposal, with a title slide, an agenda, three content slides, and a conclusion.”
  • Ask Gemini to “make it more concise” or “expand on this” to refine the generated text without rewriting everything yourself.
  • Use the “Add image” button to insert your own images, or ask Gemini to “find a suitable image” (it will pull from a stock library).
  • If you plan to present frequently, export to Google Slides so you can access it from any device and present directly from the browser.
  • For a consistent look, set the theme before you start adding content, so all slides inherit the same style.

Troubleshooting

  • Export button is grayed out. This usually means the deck is still generating. Wait a few seconds and try again. If it persists, refresh the page (you’ll lose unsaved edits, but the generated slides are usually saved).
  • Google Slides export fails. Check that you’re signed into the correct Google account in both Gemini and Google Drive. Also ensure you have permission to create files in Drive. Try exporting to PowerPoint first, then upload that file to Drive and convert it to Slides.
  • Slides look different after export. Some fonts or layouts may not be fully supported in PowerPoint. Use standard fonts (Arial, Calibri) and simple layouts to minimize issues. In Google Slides, you can adjust the theme after export.
  • Can’t find the Canvas icon. The Canvas feature is being rolled out gradually. If you don’t see it, try updating your browser or using the Gemini app. You can also try typing “open Canvas” in the prompt.
  • Changes in chat don’t affect the slides. Remember that the chat is for instructions, not direct editing. To change a specific slide, click on it and edit the text or elements directly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I edit the slides after exporting to PowerPoint?

Yes, the exported .pptx file is a standard PowerPoint file that you can edit in Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides (after upload), or any other compatible software.

Does the export include images and charts?

Yes, images and charts that are part of the slide deck will be included in the export. However, some complex elements may be simplified.

Can I collaborate with others on a Gemini Canvas slide deck?

Currently, Canvas is not a real-time collaboration tool. However, you can export to Google Slides and then share that with others for collaborative editing.

How many slides can I create in one deck?

There’s no strict limit, but for best performance, keep decks under 20–30 slides. If you need more, consider splitting into multiple decks.

Can I use my own branding (logo, colors) in the slides?

Yes, you can upload your logo as an image and place it on each slide. For colors, you can set a custom theme by editing the theme colors in the Canvas toolbar.

Is Gemini Canvas free?

Gemini Canvas is available to all Google users, but free accounts may have usage limits. Google Workspace subscribers may get additional features and higher limits.
