Delete Apple Intelligence Models & Free Up Storage

Card No. 06·6472 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Apple Intelligence models can quietly consume several gigabytes of storage on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. This guide shows you how to delete those downloaded models and reclaim that space, whether you want to temporarily free up room or permanently disable the feature. You’ll need to know which device you’re using and have your passcode or admin password ready.

What You’ll Need

  • An iPhone, iPad, or Mac with Apple Intelligence enabled (iOS 18.1+, iPadOS 18.1+, or macOS Sequoia 15.1+)
  • Your device passcode (iPhone/iPad) or administrator password (Mac)
  • Enough time for the deletion process to complete (usually under a minute)
  • A stable internet connection if you plan to re-download the models later

Step-by-Step

On iPhone or iPad

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap iPhone Storage (or iPad Storage).
  4. Scroll down and look for Apple Intelligence in the list of apps. It may appear as a separate entry with a size shown (e.g., “2.3 GB”).
  5. Tap on Apple Intelligence.
  6. Tap Delete Apple Intelligence (or Offload App – but note that offloading may not remove the models; prefer the explicit delete option).
  7. Confirm by tapping Delete when prompted.
  8. Wait for the deletion to finish. The storage space will be freed immediately.

On Mac

  1. Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner.
  2. Select System Settings (or System Preferences on older macOS).
  3. Click General in the sidebar.
  4. Click Storage.
  5. In the storage bar, look for Apple Intelligence and click the i button next to it (or click on the item itself).
  6. Click Delete Apple Intelligence.
  7. Enter your administrator password if asked.
  8. Confirm the deletion. The models will be removed and space reclaimed.

If You Don’t See the Option

  1. If Apple Intelligence isn’t listed in storage, it may be that the models are bundled with the system and not separately deletable on your device. In that case, you can disable Apple Intelligence entirely (see below) which will also remove the models.
  2. To disable Apple Intelligence completely: Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (on iPhone/iPad) or System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (on Mac) and toggle off Apple Intelligence. This will prompt the system to delete the models after a short delay.

Common Mistakes

  • Confusing offload with delete: On iPhone/iPad, “Offload App” removes the app but keeps its documents and data – it may not remove the Apple Intelligence models. Always choose the explicit “Delete Apple Intelligence” option.
  • Expecting immediate re-download: After deletion, features like Writing Tools, Notification Summaries, and Image Playground will stop working until you re-download the models. This happens automatically when you use a feature that needs them, but it requires a Wi-Fi connection and may take a few minutes.
  • Deleting on one device only: Apple Intelligence models are stored per device, so deleting them on your iPhone won’t free space on your iPad or Mac. You must repeat the process on each device.
  • Not checking storage after deletion: The freed space may not show up immediately in the storage bar; give it a few seconds or restart the device to refresh the display.

Tips

  • Check storage before deleting: Go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage (or System Settings > General > Storage on Mac) and note the current free space. After deletion, compare to confirm the reclaimed amount.
  • Use Wi-Fi for re-download: If you plan to use Apple Intelligence again, ensure you’re on Wi-Fi to avoid large cellular data usage (models can be several GB).
  • Consider offloading other apps first: If you need space urgently, offloading large unused apps may be faster than deleting Apple Intelligence, and you can re-download them later without losing data.
  • Keep a backup: Before deleting, make sure your important data is backed up (iCloud or local) – though deleting Apple Intelligence models should not affect your personal data, it’s always a good practice.

Troubleshooting

The Delete Option Is Grayed Out

This usually means Apple Intelligence is currently in use or the system hasn’t finished setting up. Try restarting your device, then check again. If it’s still grayed out, disable Apple Intelligence from the Siri settings first, wait a few minutes, then re-enable it – the models will be re-downloaded, and you can try deleting again.

Storage Space Doesn’t Increase After Deletion

Wait a few minutes and pull down to refresh the storage screen. If it still shows the same, restart your device. On Mac, you can also open Activity Monitor and check the “Storage” tab. If the space is still not freed, the deletion may have failed – try again after restarting.

Apple Intelligence Features Stop Working After Deletion

This is expected. To use them again, simply open any Apple Intelligence feature (like Writing Tools in Notes) – the system will prompt you to download the models again. Ensure you have a stable internet connection and enough free storage (at least the size of the models).

I Can’t Find Apple Intelligence in Storage at All

On some devices, especially older models or those with limited storage, Apple Intelligence may not be installed separately – it’s part of the system. In that case, you cannot delete just the models. You can disable Apple Intelligence entirely (which will remove the models after a while) or consider other storage cleanup methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much storage do Apple Intelligence models take?

It varies by device and iOS version, but typically between 1.5 GB and 3 GB. You can check the exact size in Settings > General > iPhone Storage (or System Settings > General > Storage on Mac).

Will deleting Apple Intelligence models affect my personal data?

No. The models are just the on-device AI files. Your photos, messages, contacts, and other data are untouched.

Can I re-download the models later?

Yes. Simply use any Apple Intelligence feature (like Writing Tools or Notification Summaries) and the system will automatically download the necessary models again. You’ll need Wi-Fi and enough free storage.

Does deleting Apple Intelligence disable Siri?

No. Siri uses a separate, smaller on-device model. Deleting Apple Intelligence will only affect features that rely on the larger generative models (e.g., Writing Tools, Image Playground, advanced Siri responses). Basic Siri commands still work.

Is it safe to delete Apple Intelligence on an older iPhone?

Yes, it’s safe. If your device supports Apple Intelligence, deleting the models just frees space. If you later change your mind, you can re-download them as long as you’re on a compatible iOS version.

Why is Apple Intelligence taking up more space after an update?

Apple may update the models with each iOS release, sometimes increasing their size. If you’re low on storage, you can delete them and only re-download when needed.
