How to Sign Into and Use AIM

Card No. 06·48985 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

This guide walks you through signing into AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and using its core features, from logging in to managing your buddy list and sending messages. You will need an active AIM account with a username and password, and the AIM application installed on your device or access to a compatible third-party client.

What You’ll Need

  • An AIM username and password (if you had an old account, you may need to recover it first)
  • The AIM app installed on your computer or mobile device, or a compatible third-party client
  • A stable internet connection

Step-by-Step

  1. Open the AIM application. Locate the AIM icon on your desktop, in your Start menu, or on your mobile device’s home screen. Double-click or tap it to launch the program.
  2. Enter your username. In the login window, click or tap the field labeled “Screen Name” or “Username.” Type your AIM screen name exactly as it was created, including any capitalization and numbers.
  3. Enter your password. Click or tap the “Password” field and type your password. Be careful with capitalization and ensure that Caps Lock is not enabled unless your password actually contains capital letters.
  4. Check the “Remember my password” box (optional). If you are on a personal device and want to stay signed in, check this box. On a shared or public computer, leave it unchecked for security.
  5. Click the “Sign In” button. This is usually a green button at the bottom of the login window. Wait a few seconds for the application to connect to the AIM servers.
  6. Review your Buddy List. Once signed in, the main AIM window will appear, showing your Buddy List. This is a window that displays all the friends and contacts you have added. Online contacts appear with a green icon or in a highlighted color; offline contacts appear grayed out.
  7. Add a new buddy. Click the “Add Buddy” button (often a person icon with a plus sign) or go to the “Buddy” menu and select “Add Buddy.” Type the person’s screen name and click “Add.” They will be added to your list immediately, and they will be notified that you added them.
  8. Start a conversation. Double-click on a buddy’s name in your Buddy List. A new chat window will open. Type your message in the text field at the bottom and press Enter to send it. The other person will receive it instantly if they are online.
  9. Use the chat window features. In the chat window, you can use the toolbar to change the font, add emoticons (smiley faces), or send files. You can also click the “AIM” button to access options like starting a voice call or video chat (if available in your version).
  10. Set your status. At the top of the Buddy List window, you will see a status dropdown menu. Click it to change your status from “Available” to “Away,” “Busy,” or “Invisible.” You can also set a custom away message that others will see when they try to message you.
  11. Sign out. When you are done, click the “Sign Off” button in the bottom-right corner of the Buddy List window, or go to the “File” menu and select “Sign Off.” This closes your session and disconnects you from the service.

Common Mistakes

  • Typing the screen name incorrectly. AIM screen names are case-sensitive. If you registered as “JohnDoe123,” typing “johndoe123” will not work. Always double-check the exact spelling and capitalization.
  • Forgetting the password. If you cannot remember your password, do not keep guessing. Use the “Forgot Password” link on the login screen to reset it via your recovery email address.
  • Using the wrong client. The original AIM service was discontinued in 2017. If you are trying to use the old official app, it will not connect. You need to use a third-party client that supports the AIM protocol, such as Pidgin or Miranda NG, or use a web-based client if one is available.
  • Adding a buddy who is not on AIM. The person you are trying to add must have their own AIM account. If they do not, they cannot be added. They need to create an account first.
  • Ignoring firewall prompts. When you first launch AIM, your computer’s firewall may ask for permission to let the app connect. If you click “Cancel” or “Block,” AIM will not be able to sign in. Always allow access.

Tips

  • Use the “Invisible” status if you want to see who is online without them knowing you are online. You can still send messages, but you will appear offline to others.
  • Organize your Buddy List into groups. Right-click on the Buddy List background and select “Add Group.” Name it something like “Work” or “Family,” and then drag and drop buddies into that group. This keeps your list tidy.
  • Set a profile. Click “My Profile” in the menu to write a short bio or add a link to your website. Others can view this by clicking your name in their Buddy List.
  • Learn keyboard shortcuts. Pressing Ctrl+1 (or Cmd+1 on Mac) opens a new chat window. Ctrl+Shift+A adds a buddy. These shortcuts save time when you use AIM frequently.
  • Keep your password secure. Do not share your password with anyone. If you use a public computer, always uncheck “Remember my password” and sign off completely when you are done.

Troubleshooting

Cannot sign in at all. First, check your internet connection by opening a web page. If the web works, verify that you are using the correct username and password. If you still cannot log in, the AIM servers may be temporarily down or the third-party client you are using may have lost support for the AIM protocol. Try a different client or check the client’s website for updates.

Signed in but no buddies show up. This usually means your Buddy List is empty. If you previously had buddies, you may need to re-add them, as the old AIM servers that stored your list are no longer available. Start by adding your friends again manually.

Messages are not sending. If you type a message and press Enter but nothing happens, the recipient may have blocked you, or they may be offline. Also, check your status—if you are set to “Invisible,” some clients may still allow sending, but if you are “Away,” you can still send. If the problem persists, restart the application.

AIM keeps crashing. Try uninstalling and reinstalling the client software. Also, make sure your operating system is up to date. Older versions of AIM clients are known to have compatibility issues with modern operating systems.

Forgot your screen name. If you cannot remember your screen name, try checking your email inbox for old AIM welcome emails or password reset emails. If you used AIM for a long time, your screen name might also be the first part of your old AOL email address.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AIM still available? The original AOL Instant Messenger service was officially shut down in December 2017. However, some third-party clients and community-run servers have kept the protocol alive for nostalgic users. You cannot use the official AIM app anymore.

Can I recover my old AIM password? If your account was linked to an AOL email address, you may be able to recover it through AOL’s account recovery tools. If the account was standalone, recovery is often impossible since the service is discontinued.

What is a screen name? A screen name is your unique username on AIM. It is what others see when you message them, and it is the identifier you use to log in. It can be up to 16 characters long.

How do I block someone on AIM? Right-click on the person’s name in your Buddy List and select “Block” or “Ignore.” They will no longer be able to send you messages, and they will not see when you are online.

Can I use AIM on my phone? The official mobile apps are no longer supported. You can try third-party clients that support the AIM protocol, but they may be unstable. Alternatively, some web-based clients work in a mobile browser.

Is AIM safe to use? As with any messaging service, be cautious about sharing personal information. Since the service is no longer officially maintained, security updates are not issued. Use it only for casual, non-sensitive conversations.
