Send Personal Notes to Yourself on Slack

Card No. 06·49062 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Slack is built for team communication, but it also works great as a personal note-taking tool. You can send yourself reminders, save links, jot down ideas, or keep a running to-do list—all without leaving Slack. This guide shows you how to set up a dedicated space for personal notes and send them in a few clicks, on both desktop and mobile.

What You’ll Need

  • A Slack workspace where you have permission to create channels (most members do).
  • Your Slack app (desktop, web, or mobile) logged in.

Step-by-Step

  1. Create a private channel for your notes. Click the + next to “Channels” in the sidebar, then select Create a New Channel. Name it something like #personal-notes or #my-notes. Choose Private so only you (and anyone you invite later) can see it. Click Create.
  2. Open the channel. Click on the channel name in your sidebar to open it. You’ll see the message field at the bottom.
  3. Type your note. Click the message field and type whatever you want to remember. For example: “Buy dog food on the way home.”
  4. Send the message. Press Enter (or Return) on desktop, or tap the send arrow on mobile. The note is now saved in that channel.
  5. Add a reminder (optional). To get a reminder about a note, hover over the message, click the three dots (⋯), and choose Remind me about this. Pick a time, and Slack will notify you later.
  6. Save links and files. Paste a URL into the channel and send it—Slack will show a preview. You can also drag files into the channel to store them.
  7. Use the Slackbot for quick notes (alternative). Type /note in any channel or DM, then type your note. Slackbot will save it and you can retrieve it later with /note list. This is handy for quick captures without opening your private channel.
  8. Pin important notes. Hover over a message, click the pin icon, and it will be pinned to the channel’s top for easy access.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a public channel. If you create a public channel, anyone in the workspace can see your notes. Always choose Private.
  • Forgetting to send. If you type a note and don’t press Enter, it stays in the draft and is lost when you switch channels. Always hit send.
  • Not using search. Slack’s search is powerful. Don’t waste time scrolling—use Ctrl+K (or Cmd+K on Mac) to jump to the channel, then use Ctrl+F to search within it.
  • Over-relying on Slackbot notes. Slackbot notes are limited to text and can be less visible. For rich notes with files, use a dedicated channel.

Tips

  • Use emoji reactions as labels. For example, add ✅ to notes you’ve completed, or 📌 to mark important ones. You can then search for has::white_check_mark: to find done items.
  • Create a daily reminder to review your notes. Use Slack’s reminder feature: type /remind #personal-notes “Review your notes” every weekday at 9:00 AM.
  • Use sections in the channel. You can post a message like “— IDEAS —” and then reply to it as a thread to keep related notes together.
  • Set up a workflow (paid plans). If your workspace has Workflow Builder, you can create a shortcut to send notes to your private channel with a slash command like /note.
  • Keep it organized. If you have many notes, consider creating multiple private channels: #work-notes, #personal-notes, etc.

Troubleshooting

  • Note didn’t send. Check your internet connection. If the message shows an error, copy the text, refresh Slack, and try again.
  • Channel is not visible. If you created a private channel, it appears under “Channels” in the sidebar. If you can’t see it, use Ctrl+K and type the channel name.
  • Can’t create a channel. Some workspaces restrict channel creation. If you get a permission error, ask your admin to enable it, or use the Slackbot method instead.
  • Slackbot notes not showing. Type /note list to see all your notes. If that fails, try /notes or check the Slack help center for your version.
  • Reminders not working. Make sure you have notifications enabled for Slack on your device. Check your notification settings in Slack.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send a note to myself without creating a channel?

Yes. Use the Slackbot method: type /note followed by your text. It’s saved and can be retrieved with /note list.

Are my private channel notes visible to others?

No. Private channels are only visible to members you invite. If you don’t invite anyone, only you can see the content.

Can I set a reminder on a note in a private channel?

Yes. Hover over the message, click the three dots, and choose “Remind me about this.” You can set a specific time or date.

Will my notes sync across devices?

Yes. Slack syncs all messages across your devices automatically as long as you’re logged in to the same workspace.

Can I use the note channel for file storage?

Absolutely. Drag and drop files into the channel, and they’ll be stored there. You can search for them later.

What happens if I leave the workspace?

Your notes remain in the channel, but you lose access. If you rejoin later, they’ll still be there.
