“Kobold Camp Cleanup” is a level 3 quest in World of Warcraft Classic for the Human race, starting with Marshal McBride in Northshire Abbey. You need to kill Kobold Vermin until you collect 8 Red Burlap Bandanas and then deliver them back to Marshal McBride for 40 experience and 1 Silver 50 Copper. This guide covers the full walkthrough, spawn locations, and tips for completing it quickly.

Quest Background and Starting Point

Kobold Camp Cleanup is one of the first quests you receive as a Human in Elwynn Forest. After completing the introductory “Beating Them Back!” quest, Marshal McBride will offer you this follow-up. The quest is available to all Human classes (Warrior, Paladin, Rogue, Priest, Mage, Warlock, and Hunter) and is essential for early leveling because it provides a solid chunk of experience and a small amount of silver that helps with your first skills.

The quest text tells you that the Kobold Vermin have set up camps near the abbey and are stealing supplies. Your job is to thin their numbers and recover their red burlap bandanas as proof of your kills. The bandanas are not a guaranteed drop—each Kobold Vermin has roughly a 50-70% chance to drop one, so you may need to kill more than eight.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

  1. Accept the quest from Marshal McBride inside Northshire Abbey (coordinates roughly 48, 34). He stands near the entrance hall.
  2. Head east out of the abbey’s main doors and follow the path toward the river. The Kobold Vermin camps are located just outside the abbey walls, east and northeast of the building.
  3. Kill Kobold Vermin (level 2-3 mobs). They are melee-only and have low health, so any class can handle them. Use your basic attack and any level 1 abilities you have.
  4. Loot the Red Burlap Bandanas from their corpses. You need 8 total. Because the drop rate is not 100%, you may kill 12-16 kobolds to get all 8.
  5. Return to Marshal McBride at Northshire Abbey and turn in the quest. You will receive 40 experience points and 1 Silver 50 Copper.

There are two main camps: one directly east of the abbey (around coordinates 45, 40) and another further northeast (around 42, 30). Both are safe—the kobolds are low-level and there are no elite mobs nearby.

Kobold Vermin Spawn Locations and Respawn Rates

The Kobold Vermin spawn in two clusters. The first cluster is a small camp with 3-4 kobolds just east of the abbey’s outer wall. The second cluster is a larger camp with 5-6 kobolds near the riverbank to the northeast. Respawn time is roughly 2-3 minutes per mob, which is fast enough that you can stay in one camp and continuously kill without waiting long.

If you are playing on a high-population server, you may find other players competing for the same kills. In that case, alternate between the two camps or use a /who to check if other players are in the area. The camps are close enough that you can easily rotate.

Class-Specific Tips and Tricks

  • Warrior: Use Charge to engage the first kobold, then Rend and auto-attack. You can pull one at a time with your ranged weapon or by throwing a weapon.
  • Paladin: Use Seal of Righteousness and Judgement for quick kills. You can also heal yourself if you take too much damage.
  • Rogue: Stealth is not needed, but use Sinister Strike and Eviscerate. You can also pickpocket the kobolds for extra copper.
  • Priest: Use Smite and Shadow Word: Pain. Keep your wand out for free damage between spells.
  • Mage: Use Fireball and Frostbolt. If you pull multiple, use Frost Nova to freeze them and run.
  • Warlock: Send your Imp in first, then use Shadow Bolt. Your Imp can tank one kobold while you kill another.
  • Hunter: Send your pet in, use Serpent Sting, and shoot with your bow. Your pet will hold aggro easily.

Regardless of class, always keep your health above 50% and use bandages or food if you drop low. The kobolds hit for about 2-4 damage, so you are not in serious danger, but dying early in the game is a time waste.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

One common mistake is not looting the bandanas immediately after a kill. If your inventory is full, you will not be able to pick them up, and they will despawn after a few minutes. Always loot every corpse, even if you have to destroy low-value items like small eggs or candles.

Another mistake is wandering too far from the quest area. The Kobold Vermin are only found in the two camps near the abbey. If you travel down the road toward Elwynn Forest, you will find higher-level Kobold Workers that do not drop the bandanas and will kill you quickly.

Some players try to complete the quest by killing Kobold Geomancers, but these are level 4-5 and do not drop the bandanas. Stick to the Vermin, which are level 2-3.

Comparison to Other Early Human Quests

Kobold Camp Cleanup is one of three quests you receive at level 3 from Marshal McBride. The other two are “Beating Them Back!” (kill 10 Kobold Vermin) and “The Stolen Journal” (retrieve a journal from a nearby mine). Kobold Camp Cleanup is the shortest of the three because the mobs are right outside the abbey and the drop rate is decent. The Stolen Journal requires going into a mine with tougher mobs, so many players do Kobold Camp Cleanup first to gain a level before attempting the mine.

Compared to the “Wanted: Hogger” quest later in the zone, Kobold Camp Cleanup is trivial. Hogger is an elite mob that requires a group, while the kobolds are soloable by any class. The reward for Kobold Camp Cleanup is also better for its level: 1s 50c is enough to buy your first set of bags or a weapon upgrade.

Rewards and Experience Breakdown

The quest gives a flat 40 experience points, which at level 3 is roughly 10% of your total experience needed to reach level 4. You also get 1 Silver 50 Copper, which is a substantial amount early on. If you are a gathering profession (Herbalism, Mining, Skinning), the kobolds also drop low-level herbs, copper ore, and leather that you can sell or use.

There is no choice of reward—the silver is fixed. However, the bandanas themselves are not bound, so you can sell them on the Auction House if you accidentally collect more than 8. They are a low-level white item, so they sell for a few copper each.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Kobold Vermin do I need to kill? You need to collect 8 Red Burlap Bandanas. Since the drop rate is not 100%, you will likely kill between 10 and 15 Kobold Vermin. Each kill takes about 2-3 hits, so the whole quest takes about 5-10 minutes.

Where exactly are the Kobold Camps? The first camp is east of Northshire Abbey, just outside the walls. The second is northeast, near the river. Both are marked on your minimap as small dots when you get close. If you open your world map, you will see a yellow quest area that covers both camps.

Can I complete this quest with a group? Yes, but you must loot the bandanas yourself. If you are in a party, the bandanas drop as individual loot, so each player needs to loot their own. Grouping is not necessary because the mobs are so easy.

What happens if I die during the quest? If you die, you will respawn at the nearest graveyard, which is just south of Northshire Abbey. Your corpse will be near the camps, so you can run back and continue. You do not lose quest progress, but you will lose durability on your armor.

Is this quest worth doing? Yes, it gives good experience and silver for the time spent. It also leads to the next quest chain from Marshal McBride, which eventually sends you to Goldshire. Skipping it is not recommended because the experience helps you reach level 4 faster.

Can I skip this quest and come back later? Yes, the quest remains available until you out-level it. If you are level 5 or higher, the kobolds will give you almost no experience, but the quest reward is still worth the few minutes it takes. However, it is best done at level 3-4.
