Managed WordPress hosting and a Virtual Private Server (VPS) both run your website, but they serve different needs. Choose managed WordPress hosting if you want maximum convenience, automatic maintenance, and expert support for a higher monthly price; choose a VPS if you need full control, lower cost, and are comfortable handling server administration yourself.

Formula

The calculator above computes your running pace and speed from a finish time and distance. The formulas are:

  • Pace (min/km) = Finish time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km)
  • Speed (km/h) = Distance (km) ÷ (Finish time (minutes) ÷ 60)

Where:

  • Finish time is the total time in minutes (e.g., 50 minutes).
  • Distance is the course length in kilometers (e.g., 10 km).
  • Pace is the time per kilometer, expressed in minutes and seconds (e.g., 5:00 min/km).
  • Speed is the average velocity in kilometers per hour.

Worked Example

Using the default values: finish time = 50 minutes, distance = 10 km.

  1. Pace = 50 ÷ 10 = 5.00 min/km (displayed as 5:00).
  2. Speed = 10 ÷ (50 ÷ 60) = 10 ÷ 0.8333 = 12.00 km/h.

The calculator shows an average pace of 5:00 min/km and an average speed of 12.00 km/h.

Why Pace and Speed Matter

Knowing your pace helps you plan training sessions, set realistic race goals, and gauge effort during a run. Speed is useful for comparing performances across different distances. For example, a 10 km run in 50 minutes gives a pace of 5:00 per kilometer, which many recreational runners would consider a solid, steady effort. The same formula works for any distance—5 km, half marathon, or marathon—as long as you enter the correct time and distance.

How to Read the Results

The pace result is shown as minutes per kilometer (min/km). A lower pace means you are running faster. The speed result is in kilometers per hour (km/h); a higher speed means faster running. If you prefer miles, you can convert: 1 mile = 1.60934 km. To get pace in minutes per mile, multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934. For speed in miles per hour, divide the km/h value by 1.60934.

Common Mistakes and Limitations

  • Unit mix-ups: Entering time in hours instead of minutes will give a wildly wrong pace. Always convert hours to minutes (1 hour = 60 minutes).
  • Rounding: The pace is rounded to two decimal places, which may hide small differences. For training, a few seconds per kilometer can matter, so use the exact value.
  • Elevation and terrain: The formula assumes a flat course. Running uphill or on trails will make your actual effort higher than the pace suggests.
  • Distance accuracy: GPS watches and phone apps can over- or under-measure distance, especially in urban areas or under trees. Use a certified course distance for race planning.

When to Use This Calculator

Use it after a run to see your average pace and speed, or before a race to predict what finish time you need for a target pace. For example, if you want to run 10 km at 5:30 min/km, you would need a finish time of 55 minutes. You can also use it to check if you are on track during a training run by comparing your current pace to your goal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert pace from min/km to min/mile?

Multiply the pace in min/km by 1.60934. For example, 5:00 min/km becomes 5 × 1.60934 = 8:03 min/mile.

What is a good running pace for a beginner?

A comfortable conversational pace for a beginner is often around 6:30 to 8:00 min/km (10:30 to 12:50 min/mile). This varies widely with age, fitness, and experience.

Does this calculator work for walking?

Yes, the same formula applies to walking. Just enter your walking time and distance to get your average pace and speed.

Why does my GPS watch show a different pace?

GPS watches calculate pace in real time using short distance intervals, which can fluctuate. This calculator gives the average pace over the entire distance, which is more stable.

How accurate is the distance I enter?

For best accuracy, use a certified race course or measure a route with a mapping tool. GPS distances can have an error of 1-2% depending on conditions.
