Notion Slack Integration: How to Connect Them

Card No. 06·51348 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

Notion and Slack can be linked so that updates in one app appear in the other, letting you manage tasks and conversations without constantly switching tabs. You connect them by adding the Notion app to a Slack workspace, then linking specific Notion pages to specific Slack channels. This article explains what the integration actually does, how to set it up, and how to avoid the common pitfalls that make people think it is broken.

What the Integration Actually Does

The official Notion for Slack app works in two directions, but with clear limits. From Slack, you can search Notion, preview a page link, and create a new page from a message. From Notion, you can push a page’s updates to a Slack channel as a notification. The most useful feature is the ability to “link” a Notion page to a Slack channel so that comments and edits on that page are posted to the channel automatically.

What it does not do is sync databases both ways. You cannot edit a Notion database row from Slack, and Slack messages do not become Notion pages unless you use the shortcut. The integration is about notifications and quick capture, not a full bidirectional sync.

How to Set Up the Integration

The setup takes about two minutes and requires admin rights in the Slack workspace. The Notion side only needs you to be a member of the workspace that owns the page.

  1. Open Slack and go to Apps in the left sidebar, then search for Notion and click Add to Slack.
  2. Click Allow to grant the app access. You will be redirected to a Notion authorization page; select the workspace and click Select workspace.
  3. Back in Slack, go to the channel where you want notifications. Type /notion link and press Enter.
  4. Choose a Notion page from the picker that appears. The page must be in a workspace you can access.
  5. Once linked, any comment or edit on that page will appear in the channel. To unlink, type /notion unlink.

You can link multiple pages to the same channel, but each page can only be linked to one channel at a time. If you link a page to a second channel, it moves the link.

Using Slack Shortcuts to Create Notion Pages

The Slack shortcut menu (the small lightning bolt icon next to the message box) gives you two Notion actions: Create a page and Add to page. The first creates a new page in a database or a subpage you choose. The second appends the selected Slack message to an existing page, which is handy for meeting notes or research logs.

To use these, you need to have the Notion app installed and be logged into the same Notion workspace. The shortcut will ask you which database or page to use each time. There is no way to set a default target, so if you do this often, you will be clicking through the picker repeatedly.

Common Problems and Fixes

The most frequent complaint is that notifications stop arriving. Usually the cause is one of these:

  • The page was moved or deleted. Re-link it with /notion link.
  • The Slack app lost connection. Go to the Notion app in Slack, click Home, and reconnect if prompted.
  • Permissions changed. If you were removed from the Notion workspace or the page’s permissions changed, the link breaks silently.
  • You linked a page, not a database. The integration works with pages, but database views sometimes behave unexpectedly. Link the specific page view you want.

Another common issue is that /notion link returns an error saying the app is not installed. That means the app was added to a different Slack workspace than the one you are currently in. Re-add it to the correct workspace.

How It Compares to Zapier or Make

The native integration is free and simple, but it is limited. If you need to trigger actions based on specific conditions, like “when a status changes to Done, post to Slack,” you need a third-party automation tool like Zapier or Make. Those tools let you create multi-step workflows, such as sending a Slack message when a Notion database item is created, or creating a Notion page when a Slack emoji reaction is added.

The tradeoff is cost and complexity. Zapier’s free tier includes a limited number of tasks per month, and each automation requires you to set up triggers and actions carefully. The native integration is fine for most teams that just want to see comments and edits in Slack. If you find yourself wanting conditional logic or two-way updates, that is the point to consider an automation platform.

Privacy and Permissions to Check

When you link a Notion page to a Slack channel, everyone in that channel can see the page’s content in the notifications. If the page contains sensitive information, be careful which channel you link it to. Also, the Slack app can see the names and content of pages you link, so only install it if you trust the workspace admins.

On the Notion side, the integration uses the permissions of the person who set it up. If that person loses access to the page, the integration stops working. It is better to have a workspace admin set up the link, not an individual contributor who might leave the team.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I link a Notion database to a Slack channel?

Yes, but only the page view you choose. The integration does not sync the entire database as a live table. You will see notifications for changes made to that specific view, not all views of the database.

Why don’t I see the Notion app in Slack’s app directory?

If your Slack workspace has an app approval policy, the admin may need to approve the Notion app before it appears. Contact your workspace admin to allow it.

Does the integration work with Slack’s free plan?

Yes. The Notion app works on Slack’s free tier. The only limitation is Slack’s own message history and file storage limits, not the integration itself.

Can I get Slack messages into Notion automatically?

Only manually via the shortcut. There is no native automatic sync that turns every Slack message into a Notion page. For that, you would need a third-party tool like Zapier.

How do I remove the integration entirely?

In Slack, go to Apps > Notion > Settings and click Remove App. This will unlink all pages and stop all notifications. You can re-add it later without losing your Notion data.
