Pokémon GO Shadow Ho-Oh Raid Guide and Counters

Card No. 06·29194 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To beat Shadow Ho-Oh in Pokémon GO, use a coordinated group with strong Rock-type attackers, which exploit its double weakness, and be ready for its Shadow raid enraged phase. Bring Purified Gems, revive and heal your team between attempts, and avoid relying on a single fixed team size: the number of players needed depends on levels, counters, moves and weather.

What makes Shadow Ho-Oh different?

Ho-Oh is a Fire- and Flying-type Legendary Pokémon. Shadow Ho-Oh retains those types and their weaknesses, but Shadow raid battles add a mechanic that can make the fight more demanding than a standard Legendary raid. As the boss takes damage, it can become enraged, increasing its attack and defense. Purified Gems can help subdue it.

Ho-Oh is doubly weak to Rock attacks: both Fire and Flying are vulnerable to Rock. It is also weak to Water and Electric, but those types do not receive the same doubled advantage. This makes Rock the usual first choice when your Pokémon have suitable moves and enough survivability. Ho-Oh resists Bug, Fighting, Fire, Grass, Ground and Steel attacks, so avoid building a team around those types if stronger alternatives are available.

Raid availability, the boss’s moves and event bonuses can change. Check the in-game raid details before spending passes or resources. Shadow Legendary raids are generally local group encounters, so do not assume you can join remotely or that a particular event schedule is permanent.

Best counters and moves

Prioritize Rock-type attackers with Rock-type Fast and Charged Attacks. Pokémon such as Rampardos, Rhyperior, Tyrantrum, Terrakion, Gigalith and powerful Mega or Primal options can be useful when their moves and levels are appropriate. The exact ranking can vary with available moves, boosts and the boss’s attacks; a high-level, well-matched Pokémon is often more helpful than an underpowered name from a list.

  • Rock: The strongest type match against Ho-Oh because of its double weakness. Examples include Rock Slide, Stone Edge and Smack Down where available.
  • Water: A practical alternative, particularly if you have well-built attackers such as Kyogre or Swampert with Water moves.
  • Electric: Also deals super-effective damage. Consider it when you have sturdy, powered-up Electric attackers, but it generally does not replace the Rock advantage.
  • Weather-boosted options: Weather can increase damage for certain attack types, but do not choose a fragile counter solely for a boost if it will faint quickly.

Check each Pokémon’s actual moves before the raid. A Rock-type Pokémon using attacks of another type will not deliver the same damage as one with Rock moves. If you have a Mega or Primal Pokémon that boosts allies’ matching attacks, coordinate its use with the group; bonuses depend on the active Pokémon and game mechanics, so verify the in-game effect rather than assuming every bonus stacks.

How to prepare and use Purified Gems

Preparation is more reliable than trying to improvise after the raid begins. Before entering, set a battle party, check that its moves are appropriate, and make sure you have healing items. Coordinate with the group about who will use Purified Gems, since their use is limited by the game and repeated activations may be restricted during a short interval.

  1. Build a Rock-focused party. Put your strongest suitable attackers first, then add Water or Electric options as backups.
  2. Check the raid lobby. Confirm that enough local players have joined and that everyone is ready. There is no universally safe minimum headcount because player strength and raid conditions vary.
  3. Attack consistently. Use moves that exploit Ho-Oh’s weaknesses. If the boss becomes enraged, follow the on-screen prompt and use available Purified Gems.
  4. Watch the group’s status. Coordinate gem use rather than having everyone spend them at once. If the group is struggling, revive or heal and re-enter while the raid timer allows.

Purified Gems are made from Shadow Shards, which can be earned through encounters with Team GO Rocket. The game’s shard and gem limits or interface may change, so check your inventory and the current raid screen. Gems are not a guarantee of victory: they support the group against an enraged boss, but counters, damage and time still matter.

Group size, weather and battle strategy

Do not treat online estimates of a minimum number of trainers as a promise. A raid with several high-level players using optimized Rock teams can be easier than one with more players using low-level or resisted attacks. For a first attempt, having a larger, coordinated group is the conservative choice. If you are deciding whether to enter with a small group, consider the team’s levels, counters, friendship bonuses, weather and how quickly the group can use gems.

Weather can influence damage: partly cloudy weather boosts Rock-type attacks, while rainy weather boosts Water and Electric attacks. Weather also affects the raid encounter and can affect the boss’s damage, so a boost is not automatically beneficial. Keep an eye on survivability, especially if Ho-Oh’s charged move hits your team hard. Dodging can reduce incoming damage, but spending the whole battle dodging can cost valuable attack time.

  • Use the recommended party only as a starting point; it may not reflect your best counters.
  • Rejoin quickly with a second team if your first party faints and the raid remains active.
  • Do not leave the lobby at the last moment unless the group agrees; other players may be relying on your damage.
  • If time runs out, reassess counters and gem coordination before spending another raid pass.

After the raid: catching Shadow Ho-Oh

Winning the battle is separate from catching the Pokémon. After a successful Shadow raid, you receive a catch encounter with a limited number of Premier Balls determined by the game’s raid rewards and bonuses. Improve your chances by using a Golden Razz Berry, aiming for a curveball and waiting for a clear opening in Ho-Oh’s attack animation. A well-timed throw with a smaller circle can improve the throw bonus, but no throw technique guarantees a catch.

Shadow Pokémon cannot be traded while Shadow. You can choose whether to keep Ho-Oh Shadow or purify it, but purification changes its stats and removes the Shadow damage bonus. A purified Ho-Oh is not automatically stronger for every use: compare its resulting stats, moves and role with your goals before deciding. The choice is permanent for that individual Pokémon.

Common mistakes and useful alternatives

The most common mistake is choosing a team by species name instead of checking moves and type matchups. Another is assuming that more trainers always means an easy win; low damage, fainted teams and uncoordinated gem use can still cause a failure. Finally, do not confuse the raid’s double Rock weakness with a claim that Rock is the only viable counter. Water and Electric attackers can contribute, especially when they are much stronger than the Rock options you own.

If you do not have top-tier counters, power up the best Rock attackers already available, use favorable Water or Electric Pokémon, and join a larger local group. You can also wait for another raid opportunity rather than spend resources on a group that appears too small or unprepared. The best practical team is the strongest party you can assemble and keep attacking with—not a theoretical list you cannot build.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shadow Ho-Oh weak against in Pokémon GO?
It is doubly weak to Rock because Ho-Oh is both Fire- and Flying-type. Water and Electric attacks are also super effective.

How many people do you need to beat Shadow Ho-Oh?
There is no fixed number that works for every group. Player levels, counter strength, moves, weather and Purified Gem coordination all affect the result; bring a larger group if you are unsure.

Do Purified Gems make Shadow Ho-Oh easier?
They can help subdue an enraged Shadow raid boss. Coordinate their use with your group and follow the battle’s on-screen prompts; Gems do not replace strong counters or enough damage.

Can you use Remote Raid Passes for Shadow Ho-Oh?
Shadow Legendary raids are local encounters, so plan to attend in person with nearby players. Check the current in-game raid information in case event rules change.

Should I purify Shadow Ho-Oh?
That depends on how you plan to use it. Purifying removes its Shadow bonus and changes its stats, so compare the individual Pokémon’s resulting stats and your collection goals first. The decision cannot be reversed.
