Yes: Python’s if, elif, and else statements let a program choose a clear action based on conditions, often using comparison and logical operators. Operators such as ==, >, and, and or produce the truth values that guide those branches.
What operators do in a decision
An operator acts on values. In a condition, comparison operators test a relationship and evaluate to either True or False. Python then uses that result to decide whether to run an indented block.
==tests whether two values are equal;!=tests whether they differ.<,<=,>, and>=compare values that can be ordered, such as numbers.andrequires both conditions to be true;orrequires at least one to be true.notreverses a truth value.
For example, temperature >= 20 is a condition, not an instruction to print anything. The if statement gives that condition a consequence: if temperature >= 20: can run one block when it is true.
How if, elif, and else work
A Python conditional begins with if. Additional elif clauses (“else if”) test alternatives in order, and an optional else handles the case where none of the preceding conditions matched. Python runs only the first matching branch in a single chain.
score = 82
if score >= 90:
grade = "A"
elif score >= 80:
grade = "B"
else:
grade = "Below B"
print(grade) # B
The first condition is false, so Python checks the next one. Since 82 >= 80 is true, it assigns "B" and skips the remaining branches. The order matters: if score >= 80 came before score >= 90, a score of 95 would match the broader condition first and never reach the A branch.
Choosing comparisons and logical operators
Use a comparison that expresses the boundary you actually mean. The distinction between > and >=, for instance, decides whether the boundary value itself qualifies. For a value that must fall within an inclusive range, combine comparisons with and:
age = 16
if 13 <= age <= 19:
print("Teenager")
Python supports chained comparisons, so 13 <= age <= 19 means that both comparisons are true. It is equivalent in effect to 13 <= age and age <= 19, with the middle expression evaluated only once.
Parentheses can make more complicated conditions easier to read. In Python, not has higher precedence than and, which has higher precedence than or. Rather than relying on readers to remember that order, write (is_member and has_ticket) or is_guest when that is the intended grouping.
Truth values and common conditions
A condition does not always need to contain an explicit comparison. Python treats some values as true and others as false when used directly in a conditional. Common false values include False, None, numeric zero, and empty collections such as "", [], and {}. Most other values are truthy.
name = input("Name: ")
if name:
print("Hello,", name)
else:
print("A name was not entered")
This checks whether the input string is nonempty; it does not check whether the text contains only spaces. If whitespace-only input should count as empty, test name.strip() instead. Being explicit about what “present” means prevents a plausible but incorrect decision.
For membership, use in, as in if "admin" in roles:. For object identity—whether two references point to the same object—Python provides is. Do not substitute is for equality: compare ordinary values with ==, and commonly use is None when checking for the special None value.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Using assignment instead of comparison:
=assigns a value, while==compares values. A condition such asif ready = True:is invalid Python; useif ready:orif ready == True:. The first form is usually clearer. - Forgetting a colon or indentation: Each
if,elif, andelseline ends in a colon, and its statements must be indented consistently. Indentation defines the block in Python. - Using separate if statements when branches are exclusive: Multiple independent
ifstatements may all run. Anif/elif/elsechain runs at most one branch. - Writing a chained comparison incorrectly:
x == 1 or 2does not mean “x equals 1 or 2”; the number2is itself truthy. Writex == 1 or x == 2, or usex in (1, 2). - Assuming every value can be compared: Comparisons between incompatible types, such as a string and an integer with
>, generally raiseTypeError. Convert or validate input before applying an ordering comparison.
When to use a conditional or another approach
An if chain is useful when decisions depend on conditions that differ in meaning or need different actions. For several fixed choices based on one value, an if/elif chain is often easy to follow. If there are many choices, a dictionary mapping keys to values or functions may be simpler to maintain, depending on the task.
Python also has a conditional expression for choosing one of two values in a compact expression: label = "adult" if age >= 18 else "minor". It is best for short, straightforward choices. For longer logic or multiple alternatives, ordinary blocks are easier to read. A match statement is another option for structural pattern matching, but it is not a replacement for every comparison-based decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Python check every elif condition?
Only until it finds the first true condition. Once a branch in the chain runs, Python skips the remaining elif clauses and the else block.
Is else required after if?
No. Use else when there is a useful default action for all cases not matched earlier. An if statement can stand alone, and an if/elif chain can end without else.
Can I put multiple conditions in an if statement?
Yes. Combine conditions with and, or, and not, or use a chained comparison such as 0 <= value <= 10. Parentheses help make complex grouping clear.
What is the difference between == and is?== checks whether values compare equal. is checks whether two references identify the same object. Use == for normal value comparisons and is None to test for None.
Why does my condition run when a variable is empty?
Check the value and its type. Empty strings, lists, and dictionaries are false in a condition, but strings containing spaces are not empty. Use strip() for text if surrounding whitespace should be ignored.
