Quick External IP Address Command Line

Card No. 06·28226 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To quickly find your external IP address from the command line, use curl ifconfig.me on Linux and macOS, or curl ifconfig.me in Windows 10/11 PowerShell (curl is aliased to Invoke-WebRequest). This returns your public IP as plain text, usually within a second. Below are more methods, explanations, and troubleshooting tips.

What Is an External IP Address?

Your external (public) IP address is the unique identifier assigned to your home or office network by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). It is what websites and online services see when you connect. In contrast, your internal (private) IP address, like 192.168.1.10, is used only within your local network. The external IP can be static (unchanging) or dynamic (changes periodically), depending on your ISP and plan.

Why Use the Command Line?

Using the command line to get your external IP is faster and more scriptable than opening a browser and visiting a website. It is especially useful when you need to:

  • Check your IP from a remote server via SSH.
  • Automate tasks like updating DNS records or firewall rules.
  • Work in a headless environment without a GUI.
  • Quickly verify if your VPN is working (the IP should match the VPN server’s location).

Command-line tools also avoid the extra overhead of loading a full webpage with ads and scripts.

Common Command-Line Methods

Here are the most widely used commands, tested on current versions of Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Using curl (works on all platforms)

  1. curl ifconfig.me – returns just the IP.
  2. curl icanhazip.com – returns just the IP.
  3. curl ipinfo.io/ip – returns just the IP.
  4. curl -s checkip.amazonaws.com – returns just the IP (no extra output).

Using wget (Linux, macOS with Homebrew)

  1. wget -qO- ifconfig.me – the -q suppresses output, -O- sends to stdout.
  2. wget -qO- icanhazip.com

Using dig (Linux, macOS)

  1. dig +short myip.opendns.com @resolver1.opendns.com – queries OpenDNS’s resolver.
  2. dig +short TXT o-o.myaddr.l.google.com @ns1.google.com – queries Google’s DNS.

Using host (Linux, macOS)

  1. host myip.opendns.com resolver1.opendns.com – the last line shows the IP.

Windows-Specific Notes

In Windows 10 and 11, PowerShell includes curl as an alias for Invoke-WebRequest. So typing curl ifconfig.me works, but the output may include extra HTTP headers. To get only the IP, use:

  • (Invoke-WebRequest ifconfig.me).Content.Trim()
  • curl.exe ifconfig.me – forces the real curl if you have it installed.

If you prefer the classic Command Prompt (cmd.exe), you can use nslookup myip.opendns.com resolver1.opendns.com and read the last line, though it shows extra info.

How It Works

These commands send an HTTP or DNS request to a remote server that sees your public IP and returns it in a simple format. For HTTP methods (curl, wget), the server runs a script that echoes the requester’s IP. For DNS methods (dig, host), you query a special DNS record that the provider has configured to return your IP as the answer.

No local network configuration is needed; the request goes out through your router, which performs NAT (Network Address Translation) and replaces your private IP with the router’s public IP.

Choosing a Service

When picking a service, consider reliability, privacy, and uptime. Some popular ones:

  • ifconfig.me – simple, widely used, but occasionally rate-limits.
  • icanhazip.com – very simple, supports IPv6.
  • ipinfo.io/ip – part of a larger API, returns just IP on that endpoint.
  • checkip.amazonaws.com – AWS’s service, very stable.

For DNS-based methods, OpenDNS and Google are reliable and have been operating for years. No service is guaranteed to be up forever, so it’s wise to have a backup command.

Common Problems and Fixes

Command not found

  • curl not found – install it via your package manager (e.g., apt install curl on Debian/Ubuntu, brew install curl on macOS).
  • dig not found – install dnsutils (Debian/Ubuntu) or bind-tools (Arch).

Proxy or firewall blocking

If you are behind a corporate proxy, curl may fail. Try using the --noproxy flag or set the proxy environment variable correctly. For DNS methods, ensure UDP port 53 is not blocked.

IPv6 vs IPv4

Most services return your IPv6 address if you have it. To force IPv4, use curl -4 ifconfig.me. To force IPv6, use curl -6 ifconfig.me.

Output includes extra text

Some services return HTML or JSON. Use the specific endpoints listed above that return only the IP, or pipe through grep -oE '[0-9.]+' for IPv4.

Security and Privacy Considerations

When you query an external service, that service sees your IP address. If you are concerned about privacy, use a service you trust, or use a DNS-based method which may be less likely to log. However, your ISP still sees the DNS query. For maximum privacy, use a VPN or Tor, but then the IP returned will be the VPN/Tor exit node, not your real one.

Never share your external IP with strangers; it can be used to target your network. If you have a dynamic IP, it changes periodically, so it’s not a persistent identifier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my external IP differ from what websites show?

Some websites show a different IP if they are behind a CDN or if you are using a proxy/VPN. Always use a dedicated IP-checking service for accuracy.

Can I get my external IP without internet?

No, you need an external server to see your public IP. Without internet, you can only see your local IP.

How often does my external IP change?

It depends on your ISP. Many residential ISPs assign dynamic IPs that change every few days or when the modem reboots. Some offer static IPs for an extra fee.

Is there a command to get the IP and also see location?

Yes, use curl ipinfo.io to get JSON with city, region, and ISP. Or use curl ip-api.com for a simpler output.

What does “Cannot compute” mean in the calculator?

That message appears when the formula cannot produce a valid result, such as when a required input is missing or out of range. Check your inputs and ensure they are within the allowed limits.

Does this work on a router?

Many routers have a built-in command line (via SSH or telnet) where you can run curl if it’s installed. Some routers have a web interface that shows the external IP, which is easier.
