To get more battery in Tears of the Kingdom, you need to collect Crystallized Charges and trade them at a Forge Construct for Energy Cells. Each exchange adds one battery cell to your total, and you can repeat this process up to 16 times for a full battery bar.
What the Battery Does
Your battery powers Zonai devices—fans, wheels, cannons, and the like—when you attach them to vehicles or use them in the world. Every device drains a certain amount of charge per second, and when the battery empties, your devices stop working until it recharges. The battery also fuels the energy required for the Autobuild ability, which reconstructs blueprints instantly.
The starting battery has one full bar (three cells), which is enough for short trips but runs out quickly when powering a large vehicle. Expanding it lets you build bigger machines and travel farther without stopping to wait for a recharge.
How Energy Cells Work
Each Energy Cell represents one unit of battery capacity. Your HUD shows these as small green pips next to the battery icon. One full battery bar equals three cells, and the maximum possible is 16 cells (about five and a half bars).
When you spend a Crystallized Charge at a Forge Construct, you gain one cell immediately. There’s no limit on how many you can buy in a single visit, as long as you have enough charges. The cost per cell is 100 Crystallized Charges, and this price never increases.
Where to Find Crystallized Charges
Crystallized Charges come from several sources, each with a different yield:
- Zonai devices in the Depths: Many abandoned devices and structures contain charges. Look for glowing green deposits or chests.
- Boss enemies: Defeating Flux Constructs, Frox, and other mini-bosses in the Depths drops a handful of charges (usually 10–20).
- Yiga Clan hideouts: Some camps have stashes of charges.
- Treasure chests: Scattered across the Depths, Sky Islands, and even Hyrule Field, chests often contain 5–20 charges.
- Refinery in the Depths: You can convert Zonaite (the green ore) into charges at a Refinery Forge. One Zonaite gives one charge, and a Large Zonaite gives twenty.
Zonaite is far more common than raw charges. You can mine it from ore deposits in the Depths, defeat enemies like Like Likes and Frox that drop it, or find it in chests. The Refinery is located in the Great Abandoned Central Mine, near the center of the Depths.
How to Trade for More Battery
Once you have Crystallized Charges, find a Forge Construct. These are large, friendly Zonai constructs found in the Depths, usually near mines or refineries. The most accessible one is in the Great Abandoned Central Mine, right next to the Refinery.
Talk to the Forge Construct and select “Trade for Energy Cell.” You’ll see your current charge count and the cost of one cell (100). Confirm the trade, and your battery increases by one cell immediately.
There are also smaller Forge Constructs in other Depths regions, such as the Gerudo Canyon Mine and the Lanayru Great Spring Mine. They all offer the same trade, so use whichever is closest.
How to Get Zonaite Efficiently
Since Zonaite is the main currency for battery expansion, farming it efficiently saves time. Here are the best methods:
- Mine ore deposits: These are the black-and-green rocks that glow in the Depths. Hit them with a weapon or bomb to break them. Each deposit yields 3–5 Zonaite.
- Defeat Frox: These giant frog-like enemies drop 10–15 Zonaite and sometimes a Large Zonaite. They are common in the central and northern Depths.
- Kill Like Likes: These blob enemies often drop 5–10 Zonaite and are easy to defeat.
- Clear Yiga Clan bases: Some hideouts have chests with Large Zonaite.
A good route is to start at the Great Abandoned Central Mine, clear the nearby ore deposits, then head south to the Gerudo Canyon Mine. You can gather 200–300 Zonaite in about 30 minutes with a decent weapon.
Battery Recharge and Upgrades
Your battery recharges automatically over time, but you can speed it up by using a Zonai Charge (the consumable item). One charge instantly refills a full bar. These are found in the Depths and sometimes dropped by enemies. You can also buy them from certain vendors, but they are rare.
There is no way to increase the recharge rate permanently; only the capacity grows. So if you plan long trips, carry a few Zonai Charges as backup.
Common Mistakes and Misconceptions
Many players think they need to find all Energy Cell upgrades before tackling the main story. That’s not true—the game is designed so you can complete it with the base battery. The expansion is for convenience and creativity.
Another mistake is trading Zonaite directly at a Forge Construct instead of converting it to charges first. The Forge Construct only accepts Crystallized Charges, not raw Zonaite. You must use the Refinery first.
Some also confuse Energy Cells with the “battery” you see on the HUD. The HUD shows three cells per bar, so when you trade once, you get one pip, not a full bar. That’s normal.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many Energy Cells do I need for full battery?
You need 16 cells total. You start with 3, so you need to trade 13 times (1,300 Crystallized Charges).
Can I get more than 16 cells?
No. 16 is the maximum. After that, the Forge Construct will say you have no more room.
Where is the fastest way to get Crystallized Charges?
The fastest is to farm Zonaite in the Depths and convert it at the Refinery. A good spot is the central mine area, where you can find many ore deposits in a small radius.
Do Energy Cells carry over to a new game?
No. You start fresh in a new playthrough, so you’ll need to collect charges again.
Is there a way to recharge the battery faster without items?
No, only Zonai Charges or waiting. There’s no upgrade that speeds up natural regeneration.
Can I sell Energy Cells?
No. Once you have them, they’re permanent. You can’t sell or remove them.
