Unblock Someone on Messenger: Step-by-Step Guide

Card No. 06·31418 · Updated · Standard formula, shown below

To unblock someone on Messenger, open the Messenger app, tap your profile picture, select “Privacy & Safety,” then “Blocked people,” find the person’s name, and tap “Unblock” next to it. This restores your ability to message each other and see each other’s active status and stories, though any messages sent while blocked will not be delivered retroactively.

Why Blocking Exists

Blocking on Messenger is a privacy tool that stops a specific person from sending you messages, calling you, or seeing when you are active. When you block someone, they are also blocked on Facebook, which means you both lose the ability to view each other’s profiles, posts, or friend lists. The feature is designed to give you control over who can reach you, whether to avoid harassment, take a break from a relationship, or simply reduce digital noise. Unblocking reverses that restriction, but it does not automatically re-establish a friendship or follow connection—you would need to send a new friend request if you want that.

How to Unblock on Mobile (iOS and Android)

The steps are nearly identical on both platforms. Here is what to do:

  1. Open the Messenger app on your phone.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the top-left corner.
  3. Scroll down and tap “Privacy & Safety.”
  4. Tap “Blocked people.” You will see a list of everyone you have blocked.
  5. Find the person you want to unblock and tap the “Unblock” button next to their name.
  6. Confirm the action when prompted.

Once you unblock, the person will be able to message you again immediately. They will not receive a notification that you unblocked them, but they will notice that their messages start going through again.

How to Unblock on Desktop (Facebook.com)

Since Messenger and Facebook are linked, you can also unblock from a web browser:

  1. Go to facebook.com and log in.
  2. Click your profile picture in the top-right corner, then select “Settings & Privacy,” then “Settings.”
  3. In the left sidebar, click “Privacy,” then “Blocking.”
  4. Under “Block users,” you will see your blocked list. Click “Unblock” next to the person’s name.
  5. Confirm the action.

This works for both the main Facebook site and the Messenger web version, as they share the same block list.

What Happens After You Unblock

Unblocking does not restore message history from the blocked period. Any messages the person sent while you had them blocked will not appear in your chat, and they will not see your replies to those messages. However, your previous conversation history (from before the block) remains intact and will reappear in your chat list once unblocked. You can then send a new message to start the conversation again.

Also note that unblocking does not automatically re-friend the person on Facebook. If you had unfriended them before blocking, you will need to send a new friend request. If you were still friends when you blocked them, the friendship remains, but you may need to adjust your privacy settings to see each other’s posts again.

Common Problems and Solutions

Sometimes the unblock process is not straightforward. Here are a few issues you might run into:

  • Can’t find the person in your blocked list: If you blocked them through a different account (e.g., an old Facebook account), you will need to log into that account to unblock them. Also, if you blocked them on Instagram, that is a separate block list—Messenger and Instagram direct messages are now unified, but the block settings are separate.
  • Unblock button not working: Try closing the app completely and reopening it, or use the desktop version. A temporary glitch can sometimes prevent the action from registering.
  • Person still can’t message you: Make sure you have not also blocked them on Instagram, as the unified messaging system may carry over restrictions. Check your Instagram blocked list as well.
  • You see “Message Request” instead of a chat: If the person is not your friend and you have strict message settings, their message may appear as a request rather than a direct message. You can accept it from the Chats tab by tapping “Message Requests.”

Unblocking vs. Deleting a Conversation

Many people confuse unblocking with deleting a chat. Unblocking only removes the restriction on communication; it does not delete any messages. Deleting a conversation removes the chat history from your device, but the other person may still have their copy. If you want to both unblock and remove the chat, you must do both actions separately. To delete a conversation on Messenger, swipe left on the chat (mobile) or click the “i” icon (desktop) and select “Delete Chat.” Note that deleting a chat does not unblock the person, and unblocking does not delete the chat.

Privacy Considerations

Before unblocking, think about why you blocked the person in the first place. If it was due to harassment or abuse, unblocking may reopen the door to unwanted contact. Messenger does not notify the person when you unblock them, but they will likely notice when their messages start delivering. If you are unblocking to give someone a second chance, you can also adjust your privacy settings to limit what they see—for example, you can restrict them from seeing your active status or stories without fully blocking them. To do this, go to “Privacy & Safety” and toggle off “Active Status” for that specific person, or customize your story settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the person know I unblocked them?

No, Messenger does not send a notification when you unblock someone. However, they will likely notice that their messages are no longer marked as “not delivered” and that they can see your active status again.

Can I unblock someone if I don’t remember their exact name?

Yes, you can scroll through your blocked list in the Privacy & Safety settings. The list shows profile pictures and names, so you can identify the person visually. If you have blocked many people, you can also use the search bar within the blocked list.

Will unblocking restore my old messages with that person?

Yes, any conversation history from before the block will reappear in your chat list. Messages sent during the block period are not delivered or stored, so those are permanently lost.

Does unblocking on Messenger also unblock on Facebook?

Yes, the block is shared between Messenger and Facebook. Unblocking in one app will unblock in the other, so you will be able to see each other’s profiles and send friend requests again.

What if I blocked someone on Instagram but not Messenger?

Instagram and Messenger are integrated for messaging, but their block lists are separate. If you blocked someone on Instagram, you need to unblock them in Instagram’s settings to allow them to message you on either platform. Unblocking in Messenger alone will not lift an Instagram block.

Can I unblock someone without them knowing I’m online?

Yes, after unblocking, you can turn off your Active Status in Messenger settings. This hides your online presence from everyone, including the person you just unblocked. You can also turn it off just for that person by going to their profile and changing the active status setting.
