DayZ vehicles and tents usually disappear after a restart because the server did not save their persistence data, the objects were removed by a cleanup rule, or a mod or server setting changed what can persist. On a community server, check its rules and ask an administrator to inspect the logs and persistence files; on a server you manage, verify persistence is enabled and the server shuts down cleanly before changing anything.
How DayZ persistence works
DayZ servers save persistent objects and their state so that items can remain in the world across restarts. A vehicle’s location and condition, or a tent’s placement and contents, may therefore survive a restart—but persistence is not a guarantee that every object will remain indefinitely. Server configuration, item lifetime rules, cleanup systems, mods, and save failures can all affect what returns when the server starts again.
A restart is also different from a wipe. A routine restart should not, by itself, mean that the world has been deliberately reset. A wipe or a change to the server’s mission or persistence data can remove objects, however. The exact behavior depends on the server and its configuration, so there is no single fix that applies to every disappearance.
First check whether the items are really gone
Before concluding that a vehicle or tent despawned, rule out a location or access issue. A vehicle may have been moved, rolled down a slope, or become stuck or hidden by terrain. Tents can be difficult to see in vegetation, and another player may have taken, packed, or destroyed one. On a public server, other players’ actions are a realistic possibility.
- Reconnect to the same server, checking its name and any server listing details. Your character and belongings do not automatically transfer between unrelated servers.
- Return to the exact location and search the nearby area, including slopes, bushes, and places a vehicle could have rolled.
- Ask whether the server recently wiped its world, changed its mission, updated mods, or announced maintenance.
- Check server announcements or ask an administrator whether cleanup rules or persistence problems were reported.
Do not assume that an item is recoverable just because it existed before the restart. Once persistence data has been lost or an object has been cleaned up, only a server administrator with suitable backups may be able to restore it.
Common causes of disappearance
Persistence is disabled or not saving. If a server is configured not to preserve the world, or its save process is failing, persistent objects may not return as expected. A crash, forced shutdown, storage problem, or misconfigured server setup can also prevent recent changes from being written reliably.
Cleanup or lifetime settings removed the object. DayZ server settings and mission data can govern how long different object types remain. A vehicle or tent may be affected by its class-specific lifetime, cleanup behavior, or rules for objects considered abandoned. The relevant settings vary by server version and configuration; do not assume every vehicle and every tent uses the same timer.
A wipe or data-folder change occurred. Administrators may intentionally reset persistence, or a server may start with a different mission or an empty persistence location after an update or migration. In that case, the server can appear healthy while loading a new world state with none of the previous objects.
Mods or configuration changes interfered. Community servers may use mods that add, alter, or manage vehicles and storage. A mod update, missing dependency, load-order change, or incompatible configuration can affect objects or prevent the server from loading saved data as expected.
Another player changed the world. Vehicles and tents can be moved, dismantled, damaged, or otherwise affected by gameplay. A restart may simply be when you notice the change; it does not prove that the restart caused it.
Fixes for players
- Confirm the server and restart type. Make sure you returned to the same server, and check whether the restart was routine or part of a wipe, migration, or maintenance operation.
- Search around the last known location. Check nearby terrain and ask teammates whether they moved or packed the object. For a vehicle, consider whether it could have rolled or become obstructed.
- Read the server’s rules and announcements. Community administrators may publish persistence, cleanup, restart, or wipe policies. Official and community servers do not necessarily use identical settings.
- Contact an administrator with useful details. Provide the server name, approximate location, object type, last time you saw it, and the restart after which it was missing. Ask whether logs or backups show a wipe, cleanup, or save problem.
Players generally cannot repair a server’s persistence files themselves. Avoid repeatedly placing valuable gear in a questionable location until the administrator confirms the server is saving correctly.
Checks for server administrators
If you administer the server, make a backup before editing configuration or persistence data. Then compare the current setup with the last known working configuration and investigate in a controlled order:
- Confirm that the intended persistence setting is enabled and that the server is loading the expected mission and persistence directory.
- Review startup, shutdown, and server logs for save errors, crashes, permission problems, missing files, or mod-loading failures around the relevant restart.
- Check whether the world was wiped, the persistence directory was replaced, or a deployment or update created a fresh data location.
- Inspect the relevant mission and cleanup settings for the affected object types. Check the actual configuration in use rather than relying on a guide written for a different setup.
- Test recent mod or configuration changes one at a time, using a backup or test environment where practical. Confirm compatibility before restoring a modded setup.
- Use the server’s normal, orderly shutdown process and verify that data is being saved before restarting. A forced stop can interrupt writes.
Do not delete persistence files as a troubleshooting shortcut: that can cause a broader reset and make recovery harder. If a save is corrupt or missing, preserve the current files and consult the server host or relevant server documentation before attempting restoration.
Preventing future losses
There is no player-side placement trick that overrides server cleanup or failed persistence. For a server operator, the practical protections are reliable backups, documented restart and wipe procedures, monitoring logs, and testing configuration or mod updates before applying them to a live world. Keep backups outside the live persistence directory so an accidental reset or deployment cannot overwrite both the world and its recovery copy.
For players, learn the server’s rules before storing valuable equipment, and treat a public community server as a world controlled by its owner. If the administrator confirms that objects expire after a set period or that periodic wipes occur, plan around those policies rather than expecting a tent or vehicle to remain permanently.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do DayZ vehicles despawn after every restart?
No. A normal restart does not necessarily remove vehicles. Whether one persists depends on server persistence, cleanup and lifetime rules, player actions, and whether the server experienced a wipe or save problem.
Why did my tent disappear after a server restart?
It may have been affected by a persistence failure, cleanup rule, wipe, configuration or mod change, or another player. Check the server’s announcements and ask its administrator to investigate the relevant logs.
Can I recover a vehicle or tent that has despawned?
Usually not through a player-side action. An administrator may be able to identify the cause or restore data from a suitable backup, but recovery is not guaranteed, especially after a wipe or overwritten save.
Does restarting DayZ reset the server?
A routine restart and a world wipe are different. A restart stops and starts the server; a wipe deliberately clears or replaces world data. Check the server’s notice or ask its operator which occurred.
Will relogging or moving a tent make it persist?
Relogging does not repair server-side saving. Moving an object may change its state, but it cannot overcome a wipe, disabled persistence, or cleanup policy. Confirm that the server saves properly before relying on it.
